Lapine and Sondheim, once upon a time...
The fall shows, voyeur information
Fashion and Surrealism: After the coming of Dali, the Surrealists took over the business of haute couture and have never relinquished control. Headlining an allstar cast of designers and artists are Pierre Cardin and the fabled couturiere Elsa Schiaparelli, who collaborated with Jean Cocteau and Dali, producing Surrealistic fantasies like Pink Profile Jacket and Shoe Hat, respectively. "Fashion and Surrealism" (also the title of a book by Richard Martin published by Rizzoli in conjunction with the show) is a most loving tribute. (Fashion Institute of Technology. New York. October 30—January 23.) Doifflio Morisott The first major American retrospective of the eminent French Impressionist whose reputation in this country has for too long languished in the shadow of Mary Cassatt. The exhibition will include many works not shown since the death of this brilliant colorist. (National Gallery. Washington, D.C. Through November 29.) Mf col Dudiconps The daddy of Dada would have turned one hundred this year. Included in this centennial exhibition are, bien sur, the fabled Large Glass and, less predictably, The Given: L The Waterfall, 2. The Illuminating Gas, a room-size tableau that Duchamp worked on secretly for twenty years after his "retirement." (Philadelphia Museum of Art. Through January 3.)
