Through DeMille

'All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up," said Gloria Swanson in 1950. This month, the close-up will be of Cecil B. DeMille himself, when Christie's auctions off more than two hundred lots of the mogul's estate (including a Norman Rockwell portrait of Victor Mature as Samson in DeMille's Samson and Delilah, and DeMille's Gothic Revival desk) and Harry N. Abrams publishes Anne Edwards's The DeMilles: An American Family. The book chronicles Hollywood history through the director's sprawling career, but also charts the seminal choreographic work of Cecil's niece Agnes, and the rest of the enterprising clan.
