It's a terrific idea for a movie. Who Framed Roger Rabbit imagines a world in which famous cartoon characters are played by creatures called Toons—hardworking "actors" who, when their day is done down at the cartoon-making factory, like to knock back a drink or two with all the liveaction actors. Bob Hoskins is the down-on-his-luck gumshoe whom the celebrated performer Roger Rabbit (with Hoskins at right) hires to help him beat a murder rap; it seems the victim was a live-action Romeo who had been fooling around with Rabbit's alltoo-animated wife. To pull off a movie like this one, you need people who can handle the most elaborate special effects without letting them cramp their goofball imagination. And who better than producer Steven Spielberg and director Robert Zemeckis, whose last collaboration was Back to the Future?
