flB sk anyone what JH three books he'd IW bring to a desert I H island and he'll LI probably name the ■ Bible, The Complete I Works of ShakeMHspeare, and Boat Building Made Easy. But ask him what three paintings he'd bring and he'll probably say he never thought about it.
Philippe de Montebello, director of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, chose three works housed in Europe. Ever her own woman, Madonna wanted works exclusively from her personal collection. Artist David Salle chose a Titian that shows "the cruelty of fate without being overwrought," a Manet whose "fatalistic cynicism would make it easier to leave the world behind," and a Jackson Pollock because "the drip paintings make you feel everything truly great and transcendent is in our imaginations."
