EXPERIENCE: Barrett was on one of the first seasons of MTV's The Real World. "I wasn't really sure what the show was—I just thought it was a documentary about young people. I didn't really understand that eight years later I'd still be talking about it."

HER CAREER'S ON FIRE: This month, Barrett stars in the film adaptation of Philip Roth's The Human Stain, with Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman ("I play the woman that Anthony Hopkins fell in love with in 1948, when his character was in his 20s"), and next year in Ladder 49, with Joaquin Phoenix and John Travolta, in a role she knew something about: "I play the wife of a firefighter.

My dad was a firefighter for 35 years, so it was a really nice role for me." THE TALENTED MISS BARRETT: "I'm doing a movie called White on White, which is based on a Patricia Highsmith novel about Tom Ripley. It's set in Capri, and I play a wealthy French woman who marries Ripley. I'm trying to learn French."
