THE DROPSHOP BANKS ON USED TREASURES

When Michael Sheldon, a former Merrill Lynch investment banker, sold his used amplifier for $4,000 on eBay, he was hooked. So hooked that he founded the Greenwich, Connecticut-based DropShop—a one-stop destination billed as "the easy way to eBay." Clients can drop off their items or have them picked up from home. The DropShop crew authenticates and photographs each item before putting it up for auction on eBay. It is sold and then sent to the highest bidder. A commission based on the final selling price is taken, and the seller's profit comes via check. The DropShop deals in high-end merchandise only, differentiating it from other eBay-friendly companies. Hermes, Prada, Knoll, and Cartier are welcome; items under $ 100 are not. Because most Manhattan apartments are closet-size, the DropShop is a perfect way to get rid of last year's Manolos and make room for the latest pair. Sheldon plans to roll out new stores this fall in Boston, Washington, D.C., and Manhattan. Start your bidding at www.dropshopstore.com.
