KIEHL'S CELEBRATES A REBIRTH

In 1647, New Amsterdam's Dutch governor, Peter Stuyvesant, planted on his farm a pear tree that he had brought over from Holland. The spot was known as Pear Tree Corner until two horse-drawn carriages collided and mowed the tree down in 1867.

On that same corner, where Third Avenue meets 13th Street, a family-owned apothecary named Kiehl Pharmacy was founded in 1851. The beloved pharmacy was forced to move from the spot 107 years later. But, this past fall, Kiehl's moved back to its original address, 105 Third Avenue, and reopened as a bright and airy 6,740-square-foot space with all the favorite, original, non-animal-tested products, such as coriander body lotion, grapefruit liquid cleanser, and ultra facial moisturizer. In honor of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's designation of November 12, 2003, as Kiehl's Day, several brand-name New Yorkers, including Debbie Harry, Henry Kissinger, Woody Allen, and the Seinfelds, planted a new pear tree on Pear Tree Comer.
