This space has more vibe than any place in L. A.," says Mark Flanagan about his bigI ger, newer Largo—the club that recently relocated from Fairfax to La Cienega. I Housed in the landmark Coronet Theatre, which originally opened in 1947 with Charlie Chaplin and Judy Garland in attendance, and a lobby painted by Igor Stravinsky, the Largo features a 280-seat theater, a courtyard, and another performance space, called the Little Room. Woody Guthrie and Lenny Bruce performed there in the 1950s when it was the Troubadour; today, the Little Room is likely to get Fiona Apple or Joe Henry. Upcoming acts in both venues include the same groovy bunch that loved and lived at the old Largo: Aimee Mann, Sam Phillips, Brad Mehldau, and their pals who'll stop by and sit in. And the extraordinary virtuoso Jon Brion is back at the theater for two, always-sold-out Friday-night shows. So, if you want to hear "Purple Rain" played on the ukulele a la Les Paul, or "Stairway to Heaven" on piano like Fats Waller, or any other song ever written, Brion's your man. And Largo is your place.
