For Eloise, life at the Plaza hotel, in New York City, is about to get a whole lot better with the opening of the first Stateside branch of Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas's European-based Caudalie spas. Famous for using the natural antiaging properties of grapes in their Vinotherapie products and treatments, the couple have, until now, placed their spas on vineyards in France, Spain, and Italy. In New York, however, they’ll be bringing the vineyard to the spa. “The Plaza is an iconic building in the capital of the world, a perfect introduction to America,” says Mathilde Thomas. Designed by Yves Collet, this elegant refuge draws the outdoors in with materials that echo nature and create an environment celebrating “the art of beauty from the vine.” Among the offerings are treatments specially formulated to take advantage of polyphenols, powerful antioxidants in the seeds of the grape and their vines: a Crushed-Cabernet Scrub, a Merlot Wrap, and the signature Caudalie facials, along with a new scent developed exclusively for the Plaza—Toasted Oak, summoning the aroma of the family workshop, where wine barrels are made, and the illustrious history of the hotel’s Oak Room, which reopened last fall. A wine lounge with an onsite sommelier pouring glasses of the family’s Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, from Bordeaux, and selections from their other vineyards in Italy and Spain, along with an assortment of delicious small plates, makes the spa a perfect refuge in the middle of one of the world’s most vibrant (and frenetic!) cities.
