Hermès's Two Scents
NEW FRAGRANCES FROM A MASTER NOSE
@vf.com MORE EXCLUSIVE BEAUTY STORIES AND PRODUCTS.
Hermès epitomizes many luxuries, one of which is time. In 1979, the fabled French fashion house intro duced Eau d'Orange Verte. Thirty years later, it completes the trilogy with two new colognes crafted by in-house perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena. "Hermés does things when it wants." he says with a laugh. Ellena re-interpreted the classic Eau d’Orange Verte with two variations. Pamplemousse Rose plays off the explosive citrus of the original with layers of brilliant pink grapefruit and nuanced rose. For the second scent, Ellena sought a modern take on citrus, which has long been associated with clean-smelling cologne: “Since the 1950s, white musk has been the basis of clothing de-tergents,” he explains. “If I were to smell a bit nell a trace of musk. Therefore, today I believe that the smell of cleanliness is musk.” And so Gentiane Blanche juxtaposes the bitter Alpine root gentian with crisp white musk, for an edgy yet elegant air. Asked if the new colognes are unisex and can be worn together, Ellena simply says, “J’aime la liberte.”
