HALF OF AMERICANS CLAIM THE STATE OF THE UNION SPEECH IS MORE IMPORTANT TO THEM THAN THE SUPER BOWL, BUT WE STILL CAN'T TELL YOU WHO MILLARD FILLMORE WAS.
THE 60 MINUTES/VANITY FAIR POLL
A in't it the truth: we Americans have so much—so much—to appreciate. Starting with our spouses. (A good place to start: they might be reading this.) More than two-thirds of married Americans would change nothing about the people they're married to; parsing further, this month's poll shows that men, who clearly know what's good for them, are more reluctant than women to say they'd suggest any improvements at all. We also appreciate the changes wrought by immigration—yes, Lee (not the Virginia Lees) and Garcia are indeed now more common names than Evans and Hill. Almost as heartwarming is the revelation that Americans appreciate, by a vast margin, Sean Connery as "the best James Bond." (Still, we'll never know whether the poll might have gone all topsy-turvy had we thrown David Niven into the mix for Casino Royale)
What else do we appreciate? Well, an impressive new military folly—always. The perennial top poller in the category War We Should Have Avoided Most, Vietnam, now finds itself nosed out by Iraq, 39 percent to 37 percent. And we appreciate children; two, most Americans feel, is the ideal number to have. Although three, come to think of it, sounds best for a lot of us. As does four or more. And, for that matter, one. So, we're easy—when it comes to kids.
If all that suggests an eye for quality, let it be noted that Americans also have an eye—a no less discerning eye—for lack of quality. Presented with a list of U.S. presidents, plus the ringer Alexander Hamilton, we were asked to detect the non-president in the bunch. The largest percentage picked not Hamilton but Millard Fillmore, considered by many to be one of our worst presidents, but nevertheless a president. Choosing him as a non-president won't actually make him a non-president. Still, the sentiment is, well, to be appreciated.
This poll was conducted at the CBS News interviewing facility among a random sample of 1,185 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone January 20-23, 2012. Some low-percentage answer choices have been omitted.
