BELLA HEATHCOTE PROVENANCE: Melbourne, Australia, AGE: 24. DON'T LOOK BACK: After studying at Melbourne's National Theatre Drama School, Bella landed a recurring role in the long-running Australian soap Neighbours. Everything changed in 2010 when she won the Heath Ledger Scholarship for aspiring Aussie actors. "Basically it was $10,000 and first-class airfare to Los Angeles. It was a return airfare, but then I decided, Look, I'm going to take that and move to L.A." FAME CALLS: While casting the gothic homage Dark Shadows, starring Johnny Depp, director Tim Burton zeroed in on the haunting Bella. "It was a whirlwind. I remember getting a phone call saying that Tim's seen your photo, and I'm just like, O.K. The audition went for 20 minutes, and then two days later I got a phone call saying, You got the part." POWER OF POSITIVITY: "Everyone in my life was so part of that nine-to-five mentality, and it was always about 'What's your fallback plan?' And then once I worked at my father's law firm, I was like, I don't want to have a fallback plan, because I don't want to assume that I'm going to fail. So by that point I knew I just had to try, and I wanted to try and be an actor." Mission accomplished. KRISTA SMITH
