WHO: ELI AND EDYTHE BROAD
What: Cabanes a Sainfes-Maries, by Vincent van Gogh, 1888, reed pen and brown ink over pencil, 12~/g in. by 1R~/4in.When In 1972.Where:At a Sotheby Parke Bernet sale in New York. Why: We had studied art of various periods and were interested in post-impressionism, especially van Gogh, and when this wonderful drawing came to the market, we thought it would be a great start to our collection. Price fag: $95,000. Still own it? No. It now belongs to the Thaw Collection at the Morgan Library & Museum, in New York. It was an ink drawing and had to be kept in a drawer much of the time to preserve the work, so we traded it for Rauschenberg's Untitled (Red Painting), 1954, which we still have.
