German-born lensman Horst P. Horst is the subject of both "Horst: Photographer of Style," a retrospective opening September 6 at London's Victoria and Albert Museum, and an accompanying coffee-table book (of the same name) from Rizzoli. This image of Muriel Maxwell, which he composed for a 1939 Vogue cover, demonstrates vividly why she, like Horst, was a reigning favorite of Conde Nast editorial director Alexander Liberman.
