On July 5, 1946, in a poolside fashion show at the Piscine Molitor, in Paris, a French showgirl named Micheline Bernardini (right) debuted a two-piece swimsuit by Louis Reard. The designer named the risque apparel—made from just 30 inches of fabric— the "bikini" after the Bikini Atoll, in the Marshall Islands, where the U.S. had begun nuclear tests just days earlier. This month, on the 70th anniversary of the suit's unveiling, the Reard brand returns to the Piscine Molitor for a relaunch, which will feature luxe swimand resortwear, including some itsy-bitsy and teeny-weeny favorites.
