EARLY IDOLS

In 1976, Joyner-Kersee was captivated by gymnast Nadia Comaneci. "I'm like, 'I'm at home and she's at the Olympics!'" Soon after, Evelyn Ashford inspired her to attend UCLA.

"All of my Olympic events had significant meaning to me," says Joyner-Kersee. Now she revels in the accomplishments of other young women, from Allyson Felix, coached by Joyner-Kersee's husband, to Simone Biles.
