A group of celebrities who, when these photographs were taken, were beginning their careers
To learn the names of these ambitious youths, please turn to page 86
(Answers to questions on pages 44 and 45)
Were you able to identify all of the budding celebrities pictured on pages 44 and 45?
VANITY FAIR, with its customary scrupulous regard for accuracy, has been careful to ascertain that these young men were, when the photographs were taken, actually engaged in the professions which we have described. But it is also true that, with the passage of years, each of them, for one reason or another, turned to other fields of endeavour, and found that his real career lay in a path entirely different from that which he had been following. For instance:
1. The vaudeville cornettist is now prominent as a producer of motion pictures. His name is Jesse L. Lasky.
2. The railroad policeman, at the age of thirty-five, began to write, producing Tarzan of the Apes, among other popular novels. His name is Edgar Rice Burroughs.
3. The young Bohemian in the group picture is Irvin S. Cobb.
4. The one-time stockbroker and soap merchant is Douglas Fairbanks.
5. The oartoonist of the New York Evening Journal is John Barrymore.
6. The song-writer is His Honour, James J. Walker, Mayor of New York.
7. The young painter is Joseph Hergesheimer, the American novelist.
8. The artist at work in his studio is Robert W. Chambers, author of The Common Laiv, The Restless Sex, and many other novels.
9. The former successful dentist is Zane Grey, author of Riders of the Purple Sage, The Thundering Herd, and other popular books.
