The Leonine beauty, who is eighty-one this month, had just been transformed from an overpainted Oriental vamp (in the Fu Manchu genre) to the star of the inebriated white-tie thrillers kicked off by The Thin Man (which MGM made in twenty-one days). Shortly afterward she was elected "Queen of the Movies" to Clark Gable's "King." How was that? Just Asta.
