Long before Jim Jarmusch and his Neo-Beatnikism, there was Robert Frank, a Kerouac with a film camera. His new movie (There Ain't No Candy Mountain, opening this fall) stars Kevin O'Connor, Tom Waits, David Johansen, and other members of the fringe monde. To understand how Frank honed his vision, one need only look at his photographs, especially his loosely shot and wholly revolutionary series. "The Americans" (from 1955), now on view, along with earlier and later work, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
