The Roman atelier of Umberto Tirelli has brought fashion of centuries past to the screen with an archaeologist's sense of detail, right down to the corsets and crinolines. The Leopard, Ludwig, The Innocent, and Fellini's Casanova were all dressed with sumptuous exactitude by this historian-couturier. The cur-
rent exhibition at Paris's Mus£e des Arts de la Mode presents the collection Tirelli donated to the Palazzo Pitt'—a stunning counterpoint of real period clothing (dating from the eighteenth century) and the Tirelli-made costumes for film and stage. You'll
