India, the earthy-voiced belter, sings on her debut album, Breaking Night, with an urgency that could only be urban (of Italian and Puerto Rican—but not Indian—descent, she's a Bronx baby). Onstage, she dons green lipstick, a clip-on nose ring, and a lumpy hat. Her inspirations run the gamut from Billie Holiday to Jim Morrison, but most of the credit goes to Mom, who has a four-octave range and twotone hair. "She's the reason I have my breasts the way I do. You take a look at my mother and you know where I got my pillows." And her Chutzpah.
