The Ice Man Cometh

I ike the king of rock 'n' roll, whom he resembles, rap's Vanilla Ice is a white crooner who's made it in a black medium. But, as the twenty-twoyear-old survivor of Miami's mean streets says, "rapping is color-blind, but if you're not from the streets, forget it, because it won't come out right." A national motocross champion since he was fifteen, he almost lost the use of his legs in accidents, then nearly died in a street fight. Now his hypnotic hit, "Ice Ice Baby," is the first rap song to top the pop charts, and offers to sing and act are pouring in. It's a real reversal of fortune. KIKI MASON
