The House of Gaultier
Postpunk street gear meets post-high-tech home design in "Les Meubles Mobiles," a racy new line of roller furniture created by the fashion world's biggest bad boy, Jean-Paul Gaultier. On view this month at New York's Neotu gallery, the collection is perfect for those who are perpetually dissatisfied with the emplacement in their living rooms. Of course, Gaultier is not the first fashion whiz to try his hand at furniture design. Paul Poiret, the revolutionary French couturier who banished the corset from his stylish innovations, founded L'Atelier Martine sometime before W.W. I and became responsible for the floating Deco interiors of the luxury liner Ilede-France in 1927. And as an Atelier Martine silver-leaf commode sold at Christie's last year for $77,000, Gaultier is undoubtedly hoping that the limited-edition Les Meubles Mobiles will follow in that classic tradition.
