VANITY FAIR NOMINATES TYSON AND KIMBERLY CHANDLER

Hall of Fame

BECAUSE when Hurricane Sandy hit the New York area, in October 2012, Knicks center (and N.B.A. champion and Olympic gold medalist) Tyson Chandler and his wife, Kimberly, helped organize relief efforts for the devastated community of Far Rockaway. BECAUSE the Chandlers, with the help of their church, Hillsong NYC, took diapers, formula, batteries, clothing, shoes, food, and cleaning supplies to Far Rockaway's Action Center as part of the Rebound 4 Rockaway/Rebound for New York program, BECAUSE this partnership helped the Action Center meet the needs of up to 1,000 community residents—many of whom live below the poverty line. Helping those in need is nothing new for the couple: when Tyson played for the New Orleans Hornets and Hurricane Katrina struck, the Chandlers were instrumental in getting teachers back into their homes, and their philanthropic endeavors include work with UNICEF and DKMS (which fights blood cancer). According to Kimberly, they're part of a group effort, and she adds, "We never imagined we would get recognition just for helping and doing our job as human beings." But Tyson Chandler's fame gives a face and a voice to the ongoing effort in the Rockaways; his Web site, Tysonchandler.com, still accepts donations to help rebuild the community. "Before I lived here," says Tyson, "when I came as a visitor, I always thought New York was just chaos and crazy. But when this happened, everyone came together and wanted to help; it showed me what New York City was really about." -LISA ROBINSON
