In the kaleidoscope shown above Covarrubias has translated into another medium George Gershwin's symphony, An American in Paris, which had its premiere in New York last year. Covarrubias has given us here an optical table of contents for the overlaid blasts of aural sensation from which Gershwin built up his symphony: the American himself, the jungle-tangle of bars, cafes and night clubs; the ladies of the morning, afternoon and night: the Paris of the American in Paris. The strident, nervous, melting, jeering, comical, lyrical panorama of Gershwin's structure of pastiches is admirably visualized in this painting which is a part of the Steinway Collection
