Modern Painters: No. 10

The recent show of 162 works by Henri Matisse, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, proved an outstanding success among the year's art exhibitions. The public interest in the work of this distinguished French master was as extraordinary as it was unexpected. It proved, beyond doubt, that the taste for Matisse has sifted down from the critics and connoisseurs to the public at large. One of the outstanding paintings in the show was the portrait on the opposite page, achieved by Matisse, in Paris, in 1919. It has once been reproduced— in black and white—in the pages of this magazine. This is the tenth example of modern art to be included in Vanity Fair's new series, in colour, of French masters. The series, which has proved unexpectedly popular with our readers, will include works of other important painters in the modern school
