Secret Passages
The major covert operation at Simon and Schuster this month: Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward's latest book. The man who, with Carl Bernstein, brought us Watergate is taking on the C.I.A. Considering the number of clandestine efforts exposed during the Irancontra hearings, the phenomenal secrecy surrounding this book would make any C.I.A. director green with envy. Even the title has been kept under wraps, and as for advance copies—forget it. Nervous spooks can begin assessing the damage when the Post runs an excerpt, the day before books hit the stores, and 60 Minutes airs a report that same night. Boo!
