Remember Blue Velvet's, spooky sound track—a choirgirl voice above the church-organ swell, oozing sensual menace? Now director David Lynch has shaped a whole album for singer Julee Cruise. Floating into the Night (Warner Bros.) is a melange of moody doo-wop ballads with a synthesizer undertow. Lynch, who plays no instruments, co-composed the melodies (with the help of a mike "frapp" that amplified his rhythms) and also wrote lyrics; he plans to use two tunes for the theme song of his upcoming ABC murder-mystery pilot, Twin Peaks. Cruise's own test flight as a live performer begins in November at New York's Brooklyn Academy of Music, after which she will float off on a national tour.
