McLaren Makes a Match

KAM HINATSU

It was love at first fax for controversial producer Malcolm McLaren and Spanish-American photoagency head/design consultant Eugenia Melian. Days after meeting McLaren at a party she organized for him at Romeo Gigli's showroom in Milan (where she lives), Melian started transmitting friendly notes to him, love blossomed, and they got engaged on Eugenia's twenty-ninth birthday.

Currently wed to his vogueing film project, Charm School, McLaren is divorcing himself from a new, hard-hitting biography by Craig Bromberg (The Wicked Ways of Malcolm McLaren, Harper & Row), which McLaren says "flogs this horse of me being this extraordinary tyrant, beast, and devil." To hear McLaren tell it, he's actually a romantic idealist. "If you don't believe in love," he says, "there's no way you're going to stop the path the world's taking." Coming from the brilliant exploiter, that's both sweet and shocking.
