Rock n Roles

Once, older readers will recall, rock was going to change the world, not spend it. Just then—1967, actually—Rolling Stone was bom, with Baron Wolman as its photographer. Classic Rock & Other Rollers (Squarebooks), which records Wolman's time there, includes the gone, like Joplin; the forgotten, like the cheerfully salacious Plaster Casters; and the still extant, like Tim Leary, looking oddly older then than now. Wolman's pictures have an informal feel, like very lucky snapshots, till you realize luck just doesn't happen that often. In 1970 he moved on—he now takes aerial photographs—and Annie Leibovitz, who took his place, recorded rock's move into a different world.
