Quelle Époque!

Corseted coquettes twirling taffeta parasols and parading " down the avenues. White Russian wolfhounds wearing turquoise necklaces. New York, 1987? No, Paris, 1903, when confetti lay six inches deep after Mardi Gras. Every exaggerated aspect of the Belle Epoque was tirelessly documented in the New York Herald, forebear of today's International Herald Tribune. In Age of Opulence (Abrams), that belle of our own epoque, fashion and social editor Hebe Dorsey, has interspersed clippings from the paper with her own bouncy account of the "Proustian chiaroscuro of salon life." Tunisianborn Dorsey will be the toast of New York this spring, with powerhouse parties for her hosted by Bergdorf Goodman and Barbara Walters. Barbara is Hebe's oldest friend, and sings her fellow journalist's praises: "She is sensitive and smart and penetrates beneath surface glitter."
